09.25.2009: The Robert Moton Center is an Award Winner

On September 17, 2009, GRC was presented the First Place Excellence in Construction Award by the Associated Builders and Contractors for the Robert Moton Center. The project received the award in the category of historical renovation from two-ten million dollars.

This building has been a part of the community for over fifty years and offers a special piece of history to Carroll County, MD. The Robert Moton Center was built in 1948 as a high school for the African American population of Carroll County Maryland. It functioned as a high school for over 20 years and students were bused in from all over the county to obtain an education. When the building was no longer needed as a high school, it was then was occupied by several other community organizations including an elementary school and the health department.  The last several years the building was no longer suitable for use, and therefore left vacant.

The intent of the renovation design was to maintain the original feel and historical significance of the building, but provide a modern environment that would house several government agencies. The building now houses Carroll County Board of Education, The Friends of Robert Moton, Recreation and Parks, and Change.
